Inspired by their experience with Libre comme l’art, an exchange program for artists and schools set up by the Conseil des arts de Montréal, the musicians of the Bozzini Quartet and dancer-choreographer Marc Boivin have designed a series of workshops in which students are introduced to the worlds of contemporary music and dance. In parallel with the steps that led to the creation of Une idée sinon vraie…, various exercises and activities were devised by the artists to introduce young minds to music, dance, the creative process and collaboration. The objectives of the project can be adapted to the duration and number of workshops.
Students are initially invited to work in two groups, one in music, the other in dance, depending on their interests and past experiences. The work is based on improvisational structures that allow them to quickly create “variable sequences.” A second phase brings the two groups together, layering the two art forms, wherein participants are asked to create short dance or musical sequences. In so doing, they will discover the role of “directed serendipity” in the search for new forms of expression.
